Stain Removal Guide

How to Remove Common Stains at Home (And When to Call the Professionals)

Person treating a coffee stain on a white shirt with a clean cloth

We've all had that sinking feeling. You're enjoying your morning coffee and a splash lands right on your favourite white shirt. Or the kids come home from football with grass stains covering their kit. Stains are a fact of life, but most of them don't need to be permanent.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the best ways to tackle the most common household stains using things you probably already have at home. We'll also be honest about when a stain needs professional treatment, because some battles are best left to the experts.

The Golden Rule: Act Fast

The single most important thing you can do when a stain happens is to treat it quickly. The longer a stain sits, the deeper it bonds with the fabric fibres and the harder it becomes to shift.

Always blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and spreads it outward. Use a clean white cloth or kitchen towel and press gently from the outside of the stain inward.

Coffee and Tea Stains

Coffee and tea are tannin based stains, which means they respond well to cold water if you act quickly.

  1. Rinse the stain under cold running water from the back of the fabric (this pushes the stain out rather than through).
  2. Apply a small amount of washing up liquid directly to the stain and gently work it in with your fingers.
  3. Leave it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Rinse again with cold water and check if the stain has lifted before washing on your normal cycle.

Tip: Never use hot water on coffee or tea stains. Heat sets tannin stains permanently.

Red Wine Stains

Red wine on a white tablecloth is the stuff of nightmares, but it's not as hopeless as it looks.

  1. Blot as much wine as you can with a dry cloth immediately.
  2. Cover the stain generously with table salt. The salt absorbs the wine and draws it out of the fabric.
  3. Leave the salt for 15 to 20 minutes, then brush it off.
  4. Pour cold water through the stain from the back and wash as normal.

For dried red wine stains, try mixing one part white vinegar with two parts water and soaking the stain for 30 minutes before washing.

Grass Stains

If you've got children, grass stains are a weekly occurrence. The good news is that white vinegar works brilliantly on them.

  1. Soak the stain in undiluted white vinegar for 30 minutes.
  2. Gently scrub with an old toothbrush to loosen the grass fibres.
  3. Rinse and wash on the warmest setting the fabric allows (check the care label first).

For stubborn grass stains on white fabrics, a paste made from bicarbonate of soda and water works well. Apply it, leave for 15 minutes, then wash.

Ink Stains

Ink stains can be tricky because different types of ink need different approaches. Ballpoint pen ink responds to different treatment than permanent marker.

For ballpoint ink:

  1. Place the stained area face down on a clean cloth or kitchen towel.
  2. Dab rubbing alcohol (or hand sanitiser) onto the back of the stain.
  3. The ink should transfer onto the cloth underneath. Replace the cloth as it absorbs ink.
  4. Rinse and wash as normal.

For permanent marker: This is one where we'd recommend bringing it straight to us. Permanent ink is designed not to wash out and requires specialist solvents that can damage fabrics if used incorrectly.

Grease and Oil Stains

Cooking oil, butter, salad dressing. Greasy stains look intimidating but they're actually one of the easier ones to tackle at home.

  1. Sprinkle a generous amount of cornflour or talcum powder on the stain. This absorbs the oil.
  2. Leave it for 15 to 30 minutes.
  3. Brush off the powder and apply a drop of washing up liquid directly to the stain.
  4. Work it in gently, then wash on the warmest setting the garment allows.

Washing up liquid is designed to cut through grease on dishes, so it works brilliantly on fabric too.

Blood Stains

The key with blood is to always use cold water. Hot water cooks the proteins in blood and sets the stain permanently.

  1. Rinse the stain under cold running water as soon as possible.
  2. If the stain is fresh, cold water alone will often do the job.
  3. For dried blood, soak in cold salt water (2 tablespoons of salt per litre) for several hours, then wash as normal.

When to Call the Professionals

Home remedies work well for most fresh, common stains. But there are times when bringing your garment to a professional is the smarter move:

  • Delicate fabrics like silk, cashmere, wool or anything labelled "dry clean only." These fabrics can shrink, stretch or discolour with the wrong treatment.
  • Set in stains that have been through the wash and dryer. Heat can make stains permanent, but professional solvents can sometimes still lift them.
  • Large or spreading stains on items you really care about, like a wedding dress, suit or favourite coat.
  • Unknown stains where you're not sure what caused it. Using the wrong remedy can make things worse.
  • Permanent marker, paint or dye transfer. These need specialist chemicals that aren't safe for home use.

At Easy Laundry, we handle stain removal every day across our three shops in Burbage, Earl Shilton and Nuneaton. If you'd rather not risk it, just bring it in and let us take a look. There's no charge for an assessment and we'll always be honest about what we can achieve.

Prevention Tips

A few quick habits that can save you from stain emergencies:

  • Keep a small stain removal pen in your bag or car for treating spills on the go.
  • Treat stains before putting clothes in the laundry basket. If a stain dries and then goes through a hot wash, it's much harder to remove.
  • Always check garments for stains before putting them in the tumble dryer. The heat from the dryer can set stains permanently.
  • For children's clothes, consider pre treating known problem areas (knees, cuffs) with a stain guard spray.
